Grains
Rye
VNS
VNS rye is a variety not stated cereal rye. It is a good no-till cover crop that can be used for pasture, winter cover, green manure and grain. It is very winter-hardy can also be used for early spring grazing. VNS rye can be used to maintain or build up marginal soils and has the ability to perform well even on infertile soils.
Triticlae
Triticale is a small grain that is a cross between durum wheat and cereal rye. It is grown mostly for forage and fodder because it is a good source of protein and amino acids. Triticale combines the high yield potential and quality of wheat with the disease, drought and soil tolerance of rye.
Wheat
Expedition
Expedition is a hard red winter was developed by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and released in August 2002. It has excellent winter survival and a high yield potential in South Dakota and the northern Great Plains region. Expedition is an early maturing variety and has a fair straw strength. Expedition has moderate resistance to stem rust and is moderately susceptible to leaf rust.
Wesley
Wesley Wheat is a hard red winter wheat with high yields potential. It is a moderately early maturing, semi erect variety that and grows to approximately 31 to 32 inches tall. It has excellent straw strength and is a good choice for both irrigated and dry land ground. Wesley is winter hardy. It has exhibited adult-plant and seedling resistance to stem rust. Wesley is resistant to soil borne mosaic virus, moderately resistant to wheat spindle streak virus. It is susceptible to leaf rust and wheat streak mosaic virus. As a result of its tolerance to stripe rust, it has become the most widely grown irrigated wheat in Nebraska.
Overland
Overland is a hard red winter wheat. It is semi-dwarf with short coleoptiles and grows to about 33 inches. It has moderate straw strength which may result in lodging problems in irrigated field with high yield potentials. Overland has good winter hardies and is moderately late in maturing. It is an excellent variety to use on dry land. It is moderately resistant to leaf rust, stripe rust and Hessian fly and has a tolerance to wheat streak mosaic virus. It is moderately susceptible to stem rust.
Spring Wheat
Briggs
Briggs is a hard red spring wheat that was developed by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2002. Briggs is an early maturing semi-dwarf wheat and is resistant to both leaf rust and stem rust and is moderately tolerant to scab and moderately resistant to leaf spotting diseases. It has above average test weight and protein concentration.
